The opening day of the 2017 Domenici Conference was the day we lost our Senator. The following is a transcript of remarks shared by Chancellor Carruthers at the opening ceremony of the conference:
"It is with heavy heart that I tell you that Senator Pete Domenici passed away two hours ago. Forgive me, he was a very dear friend of mine and everybody else, but he passed away. He had surgery in Albuquerque and we thought he was recovering.
As I was facilitating a meeting earlier this morning, the word was passed to me that the Senator had passed away. We lost a great American, we lost a great New Mexican, we lost a great friend. Most of us here have learned from him, we've been mentored by him and everyone of us have been supported by him.
When we talk about legacy, everybody says a legacy is what lives after you. And I think the important thing is, 'How long is that legacy alive? How long do we remember that legacy?'
There are very few people that you can say that that legacy will last forever, and that's Senator Pete Domenici.
Would you join me in just a moment of silence for our great friend, who's now watching this discussion from above?"
Rest in peace, Senator Domenici. Your legacy will live forever.
