Library: Aggie Sports Archives
Our Aggies have been making their mark in athletics and beyond for more than 120 years, and we want to make sure future Aggies have the opportunity to learn about the athletes and hall-of-famers who wore crimson before them.
“There are quite a few student-athletes from our past that are not documented in media guides,” said library archives student assistant, Nathan Aguirre. “But, we have numerous boxes of photos and other records that we’re working through to connect those pieces, so we can give forgotten student-athletes a proper place in Aggie history.”
To aid with the process, Aggie Athletics has partnered with the Zuhl Library to create the Aggie Sports Archives. Currently, the archives has nearly 170 boxes that contain a treasure-trove of Aggie athletics memorabilia such as player information, 16mm film reels for more than 1,100 games, 475 VHS tapes and approximately 50,000 photographs that span from 1890 to 2007. And, that’s just the beginning.
“I’ve taken a trip into the past with many of these items,” said Nathan. “And, even into my past. I knew my mom was a Sun Dancer at NMSU, but I never expected to see her in a media guide. When I found her photo, I sent her a scan of it. She was so surprised, she asked, ‛Where did you get that?!’ It was awesome.”
The goal of the partnership is to preserve, organize and catalog each piece of NMSU’s collective sports history so it can be readily available to alumni athletes, former coaches, our community and Aggie fans all over the world.
But, the task is daunting. Dennis Daily, department head of Archives and Special Collections, estimates that there is still a few years worth of work to do before the Aggie Sports Archives is fully processed. Eventually, portions of the collection will be digitized and made accessible online. “It’s a huge task,” said Nathan. “There are boxes and boxes of pages in this room that need to be sorted. Honestly, it’s all a little overwhelming.”
Your generous support of the Aggie Sports Archives helps further the mission of the library archives to preserve and protect NMSU’s athletic past. By giving today, you are investing in the creation of jobs for NMSU students who will safeguard the history of student-athletes of the past and those to come.
